The Carlton H. Palmer property was purchased in 1946 so that the club could be expanded to include facilities for golf. The clubhouse was opened June 15th, 1946 and the golf course designed by the premier architect of his time, Robert Trent Jones, opened June 28, 1947. Attending the ribbon cutting ceremony and forming the first official foursome were Charles E. Wilson and Phillip D. Reed of General Electric, and renowned golfers Bobby Jones and Gene Sarazen.
In 1992 the golf course enjoyed the addition of a new tee area for women on the tenth hole, and the rebuilding of the sixth and eighteenth greens to U.S.G.A. specifications. Our Memorial Tree program was instituted, recognizing members on behalf of family and loved ones. Numerous course improvements have occurred since then. Extensive drainage was installed in 1994 in the fifteenth fairway. During 1995 a stone walking bridge on the fifteenth hole replace the old wood bridge, the pumps for the irrigation system were replaced doubling the water capacity from 800 to 1,600 gallons per minute, and Golf Course Architect, Roger Rulewich was commissioned to create a Master Plan for the golf course focusing primarily on bunker renovations. 1996 brought about Phase Two of the Long-Range Plan. Beginning in the late summer, the irrigation system was completely replaced with a computerized system capable of efficiently watering every part of the golf course, the pond on the fourteenth hole was dredged to its original dimension’s and depth, a stone bridge along with a retaining wall by the green was added to the third hole. Major drainage was installed in the fourth and eleventh fairways during the winter of 1997 along with a fourth paddle court and two new Har-Tru tennis courts bringing the total to seven. The fall of 1998 saw the renovation of the bunkers and surrounding areas on the fourth hole.
Extensive drainage work and tree management have greatly contributed to the development of The Patterson Club into one of the most challenging, respected and finest conditioned golf courses in New England.
